She was never afraid of the fire. From a very young age Willow knew that it was not her enemy but friend. She could spent hours looking at the flames and hugging her only other friend, Bernie. And she felt safe and protected. By the fire and by her loyal teddy bear. These two would not let the shadows get her. Never. There was no living soul in the whole world she could trust, but she knew she could trust Bernie and the Fire with her life.
Here in the Constant it was just the same. Every night she was sitting by the fire, hugging her best friend and looking into the flames. Out of the corner of her eye Willow could see the shadows in the dark, grinning, waiting for her. But they couldn't scare her for she was never alone.
"Are you hungry?" she asked softly.
Willow put some more twigs into the fire and smiled as the flames began to lick them.
It was a very quiet, peaceful night. The moon was out, hanging at the sky like a silver plate and the stars were dancing around it like the sparkles around the bonfire. It felt like a promise of a new beginning. Willow believed that it was a right place and a right time to start her life anew. No more bad luck. No more cruel nuns. No more vicious Girl Scouts. The Constant was her chance to finally find a home. She never had one, but always wanted it. A place where she could be safe. Somewhere she could belong to.
"Who's there?" she shouted.
Someone was approaching her little camp. Willow could hear the steps but couldn't see anyone in the dark, only a tiny flickering light that was becoming a little bigger and bigger with every step. Whoever it was they were holding a torch. It was a good sign.
